Selling a Family Heirloom. This Jacobs Brothers Philadelphia Upright Piano was bought by my grandfather direct from Jacobs Brothers in Philadelphia in the early 50's.
Krakauer Brothers Piano Values
It has been in the same house since 2005 when I brought it to my home. I had it moved.
Checked out and tuned by Stanley Lawruk'Stan the Piano Man' and it has held a pretty good tune since. It only gets played on the Holidays and neither one of my kids want to take lessons, so my wife wants it out of the living room. I hate to sell it because it has so many memories, but. It is in good shape overall.
I would say 7 out of 10 or better. Missing 2 pieces of veneer as shown in the photos, but no other damage. This upright would make a great restoration project. I just had an appraisal done by a Piano Expert and this is what he had to say. Pianos were made. By Mathushek after about 1948. I did check their serial records but the number you provided is beyond what they have listed.
This probably means either the records for later dates are not available or you may have the wrong number. If you are fairly certain it was from the 1950's then that is all I need to come up with a value.
Based on the condition, the age, size and maker this piano would be valued at approximately $550-$750 in a private sale. Based on that information. I am looking for $500 O.B.O. For this instrument. I would love to see it go to a good home!
LOCAL PICKUP ONLY. This piano from Becker Brothers of New York. Was purchased by my grandfather in the early part of the last century. From our research, due to the clean and simple lines, it looks like it is from the 1920's or so. I am 64 years old, and I remember this piano as always being in my grandparents old farmhouse, where it resides still today. It has a very dark mahogany finish. See photographs) Height is about 54' There are 5 keys that do not make any sound.
Perhaps a few more. Buyer would need technical service on the keys and action; plus it will need tuning. With the five or so keys repaired.
This piano would be ideally suited for a theatrical playhouse to replicate the effects of a rinkytink-sounding instrument in a saloon in the old west or the honkytonk of the 1920s. Obviously, to achieve this effect on a modern acoustic piano, worth. A substantial sum of money, you would have to subject it to harsh environmental conditions to deliberately cause it to deteriorate to achieve that'old-time' sound.
This piano is a piece of history. And even if not actually played, would be wonderful as a prop in a theatrical production.
All 3 pedals also seem to work as intended. The bench is included. The model number found inside is 57186. The keys are yellowing due to age. Foot pedals have a brass finish.
LOCAL PICKUP ONLY at my home in Southeastern Pennsylvania(Chester County near where Berks. Montgomery, Chester meet) BUYER SHOULD BRING DOLLY AND PLENTY OF MANPOWER! Four husky men could do it. But I recommend 6. It's present location is about 10 to 12 feet from the door to the outside; you will then go down one step and over a porch stoop, then down one additional step to a sidewalk and straight out to the driveway.
It is on wheels. But is very, very heavy!

Serious buyer only please! The piano is offered for a local pickup or I can ship it via freight. Please let me know prior to buying so I can calculate the cost of shipping. Please don't buy this item if you are not planning to come and pick it up! The Piano will need new strings before it can be tuned because they are old. And new hammers due to water damage from previous owners and the lid might have to be replaced also because of water damage and a battery acid stain from an old radio. Despite all the damage it does play and look good!
Please feel free to ask any questions. This is a lovely old player piano that came with our home. And now needs a new home! The player mechanism needs repair, but the piano plays just fine, and was tuned last year. Daughter used it for piano lessons.

The Decker Brothers pianos are known for their exceptional quality in knowledgeable piano circles. And the New York Times wrote that they had'a wide spread and enviable reputation for their superior quality' 3 However.
They did not achieve the notability of some of their counterparts, specifically. Even though widely acknowledged as being equivalent in quality to the Steinway and Chickering pianos of the era. Today the Decker Brothers pianos do not sell for as much as their more famous counterparts, yet they still command more than double the price of an average piano manufacturer of that. 4 From Wikipedia. Chickering Brothers was established in Chicago in 1892 by Clifford Chickering. A distant relative of the famous Chickering& Sons of Boston. Chickering Brothers built exceptional instruments with models like the Acoustigrande and the Capacoustic Grand.
These instruments were scientifically designed to get the maximum tone and volume for size, often being quite small in outward dimensions. It appears that Chickering Brothers were out of the business before the Great Depression era. I AM SELLING MY CHICKERING BROTHERS OF CHICAGO UPRIGHT MISSION STYLE PIANO. Model: Krakauer Bros Serial No. 54775This 5'10' baby grand piano was donated to our church in 2008 by an elderly lady moving from her home to assisted living. From the serial number 54775 we estimate it was built around 1927 or 1928. We have been using the piano consistently for church music for eleven years although it tends to slightly lose tune; our regular piano tuner suggests that it needs some rebuilding. A few keys at the low end may stick and the keyboard is soft.
Pedals work fine, finish is fair. Our church has received a donation of another piano built around 1970 and in good condition. We would be happy to donate our Krakauer to someone who could use it or rebuild it.
